Genre must be established and conveyed in the opening sequence of a film, our film is going to be a gritty urban genre so we will be taking more of our inspiration from "Lock stock and two smoking barrels" in terms of genre rather than this film "Valentines Day."
(romantic comedy)

Movie Marketing Madness: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Analysis of Film Poster

http://www.moviemarketingmadness.com/blog/2010/11/movie-marketing-madness-harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows-part-1/

This poster shows an image of a castle on an edge of a cliff above water, its darkly lit. This image uses alot of low key lighting and dark shadows, this is used to create suspense or control how much of the  surrounding scene is revealed which gives the image an eerie feel. The castle looks remote and isolated .This still image is a long shot. This is very effective, as it establishes the setting and surrounding of where the action is taking place. It shows an exterior of a castle. The castle look very distant in this still image, this symbolises that is insecure , spooky and mysterious place. The castle is placed on a hill, this shows that is located in a desolate place. The turret of the castle has pointy and sharp ends. This is an indication of danger. There is smoke and fire escaping from the castle. The connotations of fire represents chaos and war. It is very symbolic in this image as it highlights destruction and  it also four shadows what is going to happen or take place in this setting. It highlights one of them main themes of the film battle and conflict. The sky is very darkened, cloudy, and  dusk sky  , the use of dark colours connotes a touch of mystery and supernatural atmosphere.  There is reflection of the castle in the sea, the sea is rippled this shows motion.  This is effective because it projects the image upside down, this can be adequate as it signifies the castle is important  in the film. It is also a negative connotation as the castle looks forbidding, in the middle of nowhere. It is also first indication to the audience that the gene is fantasy-Adventure. It targets audience is young adults. The core target audience for harry potter would be 16-24 but a younger target audience would be children that are interested in the book and film of harry potter, their parents take their children to watch the film, Harry potter is 12A PG so the younger audience would be kids the  around the age 8-12.  (Family audience). The title on top reads 'it all ends there', this ties in with the time of day (nightmare ending). This is written in serif typeface, the script is modern yet prominent. The second title reads 'Hp7'. This is written in Gothic script, it looks like tarnished gates , this is very effective as it re-establishes the genre of the film- fantasy of witches & wizards.

Progress Log of Coursework

We started our Coursework portfolio task  4 weeks ago,  as a group we decided  we wanted to use a contrasting genre to our preliminary task. Our preliminary task genre was mystery horror teen opening, so we thought of doing something different , a Romantic comedy. During the planning and research  we encountered some difficulties in relation to  targeting an credible audience  and we weren't sure what type of ethnic group . We then thought of a completely different genre teen drama. We were much more comfortable planning this genre because we felt we can relate to the  contents in a teen drama film themes such as violence, drugs, sex, peer pressure, relationships.
We started researching similar films to our chosen genre. we looked closely at Kidulthood, we then researched the production company ' Revolver Entertainments', who the film was written by 'Noel Clarke'  and also the primary target audience would be 'teenagers', however the secondary audience may be the government to make them aware of how tough life is for teenagers that live in London and parents to encourage parents to have discussions on how things are going on in their lives. 'Kidulthood'  this British drama follows a day in the lives of four poor youths living in an impoverished neighborhood in West London, where the pressure and desperation of poverty propels each of them towards the choice between a life of bleakness, violence, and crime, and the terrifying prospect of striving for a better life. We have started filming our 2 minutes opening film, we have filmed the first scene "classroom scene" and also our first film title. We think we have to  do more planning as a group around our filming and also finding suitable locations to film, so our coursework is much more organised.

Analysis of Jane Eyre Scene Extract

The first extract was set in  Gasthead in 1800's . The scene  is set in the living room;upper class. A wealthy, aristocratic family. The mother and the children are dressed in old clothing style/fashion. This highlights era the film is set in. They are dressed in black and gold and also pearls. This colours predominantly represent wealth and formality. It also shows that they care about their appearance and looks. There was a maid present in the mise-en-scene. The maid offered tea to the reverend. This indicates formality and structure to the household. It also indicates that the family are very wealthy and have a large amount of valuables because they can afford having maids to help assist around the house. The living room contained big sets of rich, luxurious, lavish chairs which were a deep red. The connotations of the deep red colour it represents royalty and expensive. The living room was well-decorated with lots of ornaments. The weather outside in gateshead was a very misty, grey atmosphere. This suggest emotionless, dullness and lifeless surrounding to reflect emotions of the characters. The house was very imposing, this portrayed how stuffy and overwhelmed, this created an unhappy and miserable atmosphere. The body language, facial expressions and gestures of the characters were very rigid and controlled this demonstrated how uncomfortable and stiff the characters were because the characters acted in a very systematic way. e.g the children bowing and greeting the reverend and also the body language and posture of the mother sitting down in the living room with the Reverend. Upright, back straight and head up. Fixed position showed that they wanted to make an impression tot the Reverend. The language of the characters were very formal, they way they spoken (accent), they spoke modest and well-spoken. This also shows they are highly-educated. The way the children dressed in contrast to Jane Eyre; the children were dressed in lace and pearls and the boy in a smart-looking suit. The connotations of their clothing represents/symbolises luxury and wealth. In contrast Jane was wearing a washed out, dull looking black dress this suggests the status between the children and Jane. Jane looked like an outcast in the family; She was at a low status compared to the children who were at a much higher status. This also reflected their hatred and bitterness towards Jane. The children were bullies to Jane and had a very horrible attitude towards her. E.g when the were dragging her downstairs.
The second scene was located at Lowood. This was when Jane was sent to a strict boarding school. In the beginning of the scene there was lots of movements going on, lots of hustle,e,g students moving around; this represents how busy and rowdy the school was. It establishes the setting of a school environment. The school was a single-sex school, all girls boarding school.
All the students were wearing black dresses with straw hats. All students were in a uniform; this also suggested that the school had a strict policy on uniform. The colour of the uniform was all black, this represented sternness and negative atmosphere. The students were standing in two straight lines facing each other. This shows the school had a strict regime, a particular administration the students follow. The dull colour of their uniform reflected the mood and atmosphere of Lowood. It reflected depression and dullness. The head teacher's facial expression were very stern, serious and strict. The headteacher looked very pale, and lifeless. This demonstrated how intimidating and scary the headteacher was. The camera was at a low angle. This showed how frightening and intimidating the headteacher was to the children. There was a close-up of her face; this shows her strict emotions and the intensity of her face. The headteachers body language was very firm, straight back, head up high her body posture portrayed  dominance over the students and shows her control, she is always in power directing the children about their behaviour. In Lowood extract the headteacher asked for the cane to be fetched so she could use on a student who dirty long nails. There was a close-up on the child's face and her hands and also on the teacher's face. This scene is effective as it allows to sympathise with the child getting caned and the strictness of the head teacher who is showing the child no mercy. The headteacher  said to all the students firmly "cleanliness is next to Godly". This quote implies that cleanliness is essential and of the importance in the boarding school. The headteacher is portrayed  as an authoritative, strict women. The setting at lowood was very dark and dull this suggest boredom and hopelessness. Negativity.
In comparison the last extract was set in Thornfield. Jane Eyre was grown-up, a young lady. Jane became a governess, a woman teacher in a private household. She arrived to thornfield in a horse carriage;this suggest that Jane Eyre became a middle-class lady from previously being a low-class. The atmosphere of Thornfield setting had a natural sunlight, bright, blue sky this suggests calmness and openness of the outside surrounding. The house was very big but looked rather washed down inside,Jane was welcomed into the house. The people e.g maids at thornfield were very caring, respectful and courteous. Jane was invited to a room with a fire place which was heated. The fire lighting up their faces suggested warmness and a sense of happy atmosphere. Jane was also offered a cup of tea, and was treated nicely. The tea set in the scene represented a sense of life. Everyone facial expression reflected the mood of characters, smiling -connotes positivity. The music soundtrack of the scene was very upbeat. The music suggested high energy and happiness. Jane was given alot of hospitality in Thornfield.
In contrast Gateshead was more ornate but had negative energy,on he other hand Thornfield looked less decorated, but had a sense of warm, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. There was a difference between the presence and atmosphere of all the extracts. The last extract showed Jane Eyre's change of attitude and how she was treated from childhood to a young women who became a well- respected governess. The change of time.Timeline of Jane's Eyre's life and experience. Mise-en-scene is very important in film because it brings together everything put into a scene. Elements such as setting, costume, facial expressions, body language, and objects within a frame.

I noticed that this extract of  jane eyre uses a lot of close-up shots to establish main characters and focus on their emotions and feelings.
So i thought this would be very useful idea to incorporate in our film especially in the opening sequence to establish main characters.

The Art of the Title : "Cloudy with the a Chance Of Meatballs"

In the nine still shots uses a rainbow motif as the background, this connotes the effect of childlike, vibrancy,  and burst of energy. The first shot is of a rainbow background/ landscape with glitter or specks on, it also shows the opening credits "Written for the screen and Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller" in the middle of the screen. The use of luminous/bright colours are recurring in this film to shows the setting and location of scenery reinforcing the sense of positive youthful energy and also gives clues of target audience.
The second still shows a gentleman on an old fashion bicycle. The animated character features and costume are exaggerated. The wheels are made of candied orange slices, and the trees are represented as big pinwheel lollies. This is effective as it gives the movie a comical feel. The use of bright colours and heightened features give the first hint to the film, again confirms that this film is  targeted at young kids that are interested in animation. It looks like the film is inspired by a children's story book made into a film.
The third still is a long shot that shows animated / lively scenery, as it demonstrates the sun rising, due to this the sea changes its colour to a purpleorangy colour. This gives the film an fantastical effect. There are also 3 boats in this title. The first title tells the audience the inspiration behind the film. "Based upon the book cloudy with a chance of meatballs". The second title below tells the audience who the film is written by and illustrated by. This is effective as it helps publicize the opening credits, this can be the most important moment in a film and list the most important members of the production, crew and cast. The font used in this still is sans serif. The typeface is clear and standard. Its clear to the audience because its main focus is to show the production names. The font changes throughout the 9 stills it is identical to pages in a story book.
The fourth still is set apart differently from the other still images. It is a mid-shot of the animated characters. It stands out. The mid-close up shot of the characters shows their facial expressions and mood the rainbow lines in the background suggest characters are happy and joyful.  The body language of the characters facing forward and looking directly at the audience smiling. This suggests the characters are engaging with the audience. This is also the first shot that introduces the two main characters of the film.
The fifth still is a close-up on the characters. This is useful as it highlights one of the main characters in the film, which is important for the spectators. The colour of the animated characters is yellow. This connotes happiness and joy. Yellow is used to represent characters emotions, they look cheerful. This shot is a profile of the character's face taken from the side, above his mouth there is another character floating, this shows the characters are doing wacky and absurd actions, this links back to the target audience and genre of film which is animation for kids. Kids from the age of 6 and even younger will find funny faces and silly actions funny; it adds humour, which is very engaging in an opening sequence. The close-up of the characters smiling connotes positivity and happiness.
The sixth still shows an elongated arm holding a quarter crust of a piece of pie. On the arm shows 4 characters sitting down trying to reach the pie, in passing nod to 'pythonesque' to Terry Gilliam stop-motion animation for the Monty Python. There is a title on the arm. It reads "Executive producer Yair Landau". The font used in this title is very similar of the typeface "curlz MT" in Microsoft word typography. The typeface "curlz MT" is a carefree font that is used effectively and goes with the theme of the film. The use of rainbow motives on the t-shirt is important as it is a continuous theme of the film this suggest excitement and positivity. The title is in white which stands out on the background "clown/rainbow colours". The 4 animated characters shown on this still are important as it re-establishes the main characters of the film. The title in this still is effective as it’s, a star attraction or star pull for the audience.
The seventh still shows 4 characters holding torches. They produce the source of light-rainbow rays. The rainbow shooting up into the sky. The ice-cream and cherry stands out as it is bigger than the characters. This is effective because it’s overly emphasises the sweetness of the film, the perfection of the ice-cream shows the film is very high energy. Childish elements, children love ice cream and sweets things. The cherry is shining and glistening and suggests that is newly polished. Throughout the still images there is a repeated theme of different types of food such as orange slices, ice-cream, cherries and sweets. The food used in every still links back to title of film "cloudy with a chance of meatballs".
The eighth still is fairly different from the other stills. It is a long shot showing the statue of liberty, with a giant strawberry as a head again referencing the tile, the use of big sweets and fruits, is quite comical and entertaining for the audience & links back to naive elements of the film. "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs" implies metaphorically the sky will be raining
meatballs. The background scenery uses contrasting colours yellow for the sky and blue for the sea. This still has a title that reads "Editor Robert Fisher. Jr" this tiles is written in uppercase this is important because it makes the title prominent&bold. The typeface resembles the type of font "Bernard MT condensed" in Microsoft word typography. The font style is formal and contrasts to the childish theme in the background because the title is important to the film, it shows the production name, it is an informally font compared to the other titles. The other font styles are played around with much more informal. There is a key focus on the editor's name.
The last still is a medium close-up of an animated dahlia flower. It looks like an inside cover of a child's story book, with graphical colouring. The colours are bright but subtle& looks like a child drew this image. This reflects the films genre and target audience. The film is aimed at children. The film is an adaptation of a storybook. The title reads "head of layout- David Morchead". The font is informal and looks quite naive, the font is in purple. This colour symbolises flowers, a boost of a child's imagination or creativity. Purple is a quite a delicate and innocent colour, it represents children. The connotations of the flower suggest girls; the pink flower- connotes femininity and innocence. Purple  perhapsrepresents Joy.  The use of recurring images of food in each still is important as it again links back to title of the film. There are images of a pineapple, grapes and a sweet corn in the last still. The fruit connotes exoticness and freshness and the vegetable links back to American culture. Most of the food items are grown in America. The green branches represent land and vegetation, the productiveness of plants and fruits.

Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels Analysis

The Opening sequence of Lock stock and two smoking barrels identifies its main character with a close-up shot. This is effective because close up is designed to focus attention on an actor's expression and to direct the audience to the importance of character.Character x keeps eye contact with his buyers at the market place ,therefore the spectators can learn that he is  assured of himself and confident.

The first shot is the opening title which uses a typewriter font in  the middle of the screen against a black background. The lettering in white, this connotes a scheme of secret service. The title reads "summit entertainment". This is the first hint that the genre of Lock Stock is of illegality. The typeface is associated with crime.

Humour is used adequately in  the opening scene this captures the audience attention, character "x" creates humour by his cockney banter, through puns, and rhymes that he uses. It used for engaging the viewers at the start of a film.

The first shot is a long shot. This is significant shot to use in the opening scene because it establishes the setting and surrounding. It also shows us where the action is taking place. This functions as indicating the setting and the relationship between the protagonist and the hustling purchasers. The viewers recognise that we are viewing a contemporary urban high street.

The Mise en scene in this scene shows character "x" behind the metal shutters this connotes a poor retail business, the crowded atmosphere, rubbish, cars parked on high street, and the run down buildings suggest an unprivileged enclosure.

Costumes: characters are wearing warm coats and scarf's which indicates season, weather and atmosphere, the costumes also indicates the status of the characters. The clothing of characters and informal cockney accent reinforces the impression that is a modern London setting. The confident accent of character "x" suggests that he is a knowledgeable yet crafty guy in his early 20's and also places the audience in urban market place.

Non-diegetic sound is used effectively in Lock stock. The music played complements the action of the characters "x" and "y", running away from the police officers. The fast upbeat music incorporated  in this scene  emphasises hustle ad quick pace of action. The style of music (rock) helps reflect the character's state of mind :impatient and commotion of surrounding. This is engaging and deliberately done as it allows the viewers to respond and empathise with the characters emotions. The  spectators understand that characters "x" and "y" have a desire to get away from the police immediately. The choice of music allows the viewers to recognise and distinguish a contemporary viewing and inner-city setting.

After a few seconds the camera then cuts to the second title, very allied style to the first. The film then returns to a second close-up of characters "x" which jump cuts very quickly to a medium close-up which begins to track out. The jump cut is slight but adds an edgy, restless and chaotic feel to the camera work. This type of edit causes the subject of the shots to appear to "jump" position in a discontinuous way and also highlights the hustle of the marketplace. The mid close up of the protagonist  re-emphasises both the importance of main character and re-establishes for the spectators the environment and setting. The third title follows on from this shot and repeats the style of the first two identical titles.

The three titles read like a list, the first two titles familiarize the audience of the main sources of funding for the film and the third naming the production company it reads "vaughn production".

Reverse shot continuity editing is manipulated in the next three medium close up shots. The camera sticks to the 180 degree rule in the edit sequence in  order to reinforce the nature of space, time and  earthly associations that have been interrupted by the editing of the titles.
