Analysis of Jane Eyre Scene Extract

The first extract was set in  Gasthead in 1800's . The scene  is set in the living room;upper class. A wealthy, aristocratic family. The mother and the children are dressed in old clothing style/fashion. This highlights era the film is set in. They are dressed in black and gold and also pearls. This colours predominantly represent wealth and formality. It also shows that they care about their appearance and looks. There was a maid present in the mise-en-scene. The maid offered tea to the reverend. This indicates formality and structure to the household. It also indicates that the family are very wealthy and have a large amount of valuables because they can afford having maids to help assist around the house. The living room contained big sets of rich, luxurious, lavish chairs which were a deep red. The connotations of the deep red colour it represents royalty and expensive. The living room was well-decorated with lots of ornaments. The weather outside in gateshead was a very misty, grey atmosphere. This suggest emotionless, dullness and lifeless surrounding to reflect emotions of the characters. The house was very imposing, this portrayed how stuffy and overwhelmed, this created an unhappy and miserable atmosphere. The body language, facial expressions and gestures of the characters were very rigid and controlled this demonstrated how uncomfortable and stiff the characters were because the characters acted in a very systematic way. e.g the children bowing and greeting the reverend and also the body language and posture of the mother sitting down in the living room with the Reverend. Upright, back straight and head up. Fixed position showed that they wanted to make an impression tot the Reverend. The language of the characters were very formal, they way they spoken (accent), they spoke modest and well-spoken. This also shows they are highly-educated. The way the children dressed in contrast to Jane Eyre; the children were dressed in lace and pearls and the boy in a smart-looking suit. The connotations of their clothing represents/symbolises luxury and wealth. In contrast Jane was wearing a washed out, dull looking black dress this suggests the status between the children and Jane. Jane looked like an outcast in the family; She was at a low status compared to the children who were at a much higher status. This also reflected their hatred and bitterness towards Jane. The children were bullies to Jane and had a very horrible attitude towards her. E.g when the were dragging her downstairs.
The second scene was located at Lowood. This was when Jane was sent to a strict boarding school. In the beginning of the scene there was lots of movements going on, lots of hustle,e,g students moving around; this represents how busy and rowdy the school was. It establishes the setting of a school environment. The school was a single-sex school, all girls boarding school.
All the students were wearing black dresses with straw hats. All students were in a uniform; this also suggested that the school had a strict policy on uniform. The colour of the uniform was all black, this represented sternness and negative atmosphere. The students were standing in two straight lines facing each other. This shows the school had a strict regime, a particular administration the students follow. The dull colour of their uniform reflected the mood and atmosphere of Lowood. It reflected depression and dullness. The head teacher's facial expression were very stern, serious and strict. The headteacher looked very pale, and lifeless. This demonstrated how intimidating and scary the headteacher was. The camera was at a low angle. This showed how frightening and intimidating the headteacher was to the children. There was a close-up of her face; this shows her strict emotions and the intensity of her face. The headteachers body language was very firm, straight back, head up high her body posture portrayed  dominance over the students and shows her control, she is always in power directing the children about their behaviour. In Lowood extract the headteacher asked for the cane to be fetched so she could use on a student who dirty long nails. There was a close-up on the child's face and her hands and also on the teacher's face. This scene is effective as it allows to sympathise with the child getting caned and the strictness of the head teacher who is showing the child no mercy. The headteacher  said to all the students firmly "cleanliness is next to Godly". This quote implies that cleanliness is essential and of the importance in the boarding school. The headteacher is portrayed  as an authoritative, strict women. The setting at lowood was very dark and dull this suggest boredom and hopelessness. Negativity.
In comparison the last extract was set in Thornfield. Jane Eyre was grown-up, a young lady. Jane became a governess, a woman teacher in a private household. She arrived to thornfield in a horse carriage;this suggest that Jane Eyre became a middle-class lady from previously being a low-class. The atmosphere of Thornfield setting had a natural sunlight, bright, blue sky this suggests calmness and openness of the outside surrounding. The house was very big but looked rather washed down inside,Jane was welcomed into the house. The people e.g maids at thornfield were very caring, respectful and courteous. Jane was invited to a room with a fire place which was heated. The fire lighting up their faces suggested warmness and a sense of happy atmosphere. Jane was also offered a cup of tea, and was treated nicely. The tea set in the scene represented a sense of life. Everyone facial expression reflected the mood of characters, smiling -connotes positivity. The music soundtrack of the scene was very upbeat. The music suggested high energy and happiness. Jane was given alot of hospitality in Thornfield.
In contrast Gateshead was more ornate but had negative energy,on he other hand Thornfield looked less decorated, but had a sense of warm, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. There was a difference between the presence and atmosphere of all the extracts. The last extract showed Jane Eyre's change of attitude and how she was treated from childhood to a young women who became a well- respected governess. The change of time.Timeline of Jane's Eyre's life and experience. Mise-en-scene is very important in film because it brings together everything put into a scene. Elements such as setting, costume, facial expressions, body language, and objects within a frame.

I noticed that this extract of  jane eyre uses a lot of close-up shots to establish main characters and focus on their emotions and feelings.
So i thought this would be very useful idea to incorporate in our film especially in the opening sequence to establish main characters.
