Analysis of Film Poster

http://www.moviemarketingmadness.com/blog/2010/11/movie-marketing-madness-harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows-part-1/

This poster shows an image of a castle on an edge of a cliff above water, its darkly lit. This image uses alot of low key lighting and dark shadows, this is used to create suspense or control how much of the  surrounding scene is revealed which gives the image an eerie feel. The castle looks remote and isolated .This still image is a long shot. This is very effective, as it establishes the setting and surrounding of where the action is taking place. It shows an exterior of a castle. The castle look very distant in this still image, this symbolises that is insecure , spooky and mysterious place. The castle is placed on a hill, this shows that is located in a desolate place. The turret of the castle has pointy and sharp ends. This is an indication of danger. There is smoke and fire escaping from the castle. The connotations of fire represents chaos and war. It is very symbolic in this image as it highlights destruction and  it also four shadows what is going to happen or take place in this setting. It highlights one of them main themes of the film battle and conflict. The sky is very darkened, cloudy, and  dusk sky  , the use of dark colours connotes a touch of mystery and supernatural atmosphere.  There is reflection of the castle in the sea, the sea is rippled this shows motion.  This is effective because it projects the image upside down, this can be adequate as it signifies the castle is important  in the film. It is also a negative connotation as the castle looks forbidding, in the middle of nowhere. It is also first indication to the audience that the gene is fantasy-Adventure. It targets audience is young adults. The core target audience for harry potter would be 16-24 but a younger target audience would be children that are interested in the book and film of harry potter, their parents take their children to watch the film, Harry potter is 12A PG so the younger audience would be kids the  around the age 8-12.  (Family audience). The title on top reads 'it all ends there', this ties in with the time of day (nightmare ending). This is written in serif typeface, the script is modern yet prominent. The second title reads 'Hp7'. This is written in Gothic script, it looks like tarnished gates , this is very effective as it re-establishes the genre of the film- fantasy of witches & wizards.
