Questionnaire Results

Above is our results from our questionnaire. We devised a questionnaire to get constructive feedback from people who watched our film. These responses will help us to know the strengths and weakness of our media product.
According to our questionnaire we found that generally most people found our film very engaging to watch, however quite a few people said that they were fairly interested in our establishing shots. The next time we create an opening sequence we ensure to have more quick and tighter edits. We experienced problems with absences in our group this restricted the time we had to plan our film. According to the questionnaire the majority of people understood the genre of the film and 60% of people who took the questionnaire were in the age group of 16-18 years this was useful as they could understand and relate to the stereotypical teenage portrayals we incorporated. Almost everyone who took the questionnaire found that the soundtrack was an effective choice for the opening sequence , the use of hip-hop and grime music helps represent an urban contemporary setting. Most people also said that the titles were used effectively, I think the bold font was used well to outline the theme of crime and youth culture. 90% of people found that the opening flowed well, this is due the polished editing. Finally i think my media film is a very successful product, i really enjoyed making my film.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?

“Revolver entertainment” is marketing led, independent distribution company. Founded 1997 the company has operations in both London and los angels. Revolver has released London urban drama film ‘kidulthood’. Kidulthood is a British drama that follows a day in lives of four poor youths living in an impoverished neighbourhood in West London, where the pressure and desperation of poverty propels each of them towards the choice between a life of bleakness, violence, and crime, and the terrifying prospect of striving for a better life.
“Revolver entertainment” is distributor of Kidulthood, and is received its funding from the UK film Council. Revolver received £76,200, which supported the production of an additional 20 points, as well as funding advertising specific to the teenage target audience. The funding from the Film Council was an attempt to bring a broader range of films to audiences across the UK. The director and co-producer, Menhaj Huda used a budget of £600,00. He believes that low budget adds to the authenticity of the film. The film was shot in 4 weeks. As a comparison, most mid-budget films would take between 4-6months to shoot. “Revolver entertainment” is youth orientated
Kidulthood is very influential to our media product.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The primary target audience for the film seem to be able to relate to the context of the film. The secondary audience may be those who are able to change things in society in order to tackle issues raised in the film. This may be those with power in society such as those in government etc. our core audience ranges from 15-24 and our wider audience group will be 26+. We have rated the film at 15 due to the fact because it contains strong language with a scene of violence. Our films helps to illustrate some of the norms of adolescent.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We wanted to show on screen, how teenagers watching look and behave in reality. The clothing worn by the characters is street wear commonly worn by the average teenager living in London. Most teenagers can identify with the clothing.Examples: hoddies, caps, trainers. The settings in the film reflect the realities of inner city life:council estates, public transport. Most of the action takes place on the streets and may give the film authenticity and believability. The music used in our film "Money trapped" falls into the genre grime and hip-hop attracting the target audience (teenagers) of urbanites who experience similar situations as the characters. The music used is produced by popular urban artists such as "Giggs".

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media product uses a variety of forms and conventions that are seen in real film productions. Our film is an urban crime drama thriller. Our media product portrays and follows the lives of teenage London kids and develops stereotypical portrayals and also explores real issues. The codes and conventions of the genre are evident in the opening sequence -the inner city setting, the issues represented, and the behavior and language of the characters.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

we did some research to this particular aspect in order to ensure that we gave authentic and realistic representation. When developing our film opening sequence we have demonstrated teenage life. Making our film exemplify stereotypical attributes and personalities of teenagers. Our film represents the not so glamorous side of north London. our media "Money Trapped" also represents black youths whom are often unrepresented in the media, or are depicted using negative stereotyping.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When creating our preliminary task there was not much editing involved, as we had to simply create a conversation occurring between two people consisting of a shot reverse shot. Therefore my skills of using both a camera and the editing software continuously progressed when creating our opening sequence.
I have gained alot of experience from producing our film. I think the most important thing i learnt about filming is the preparation being organised and relying on other members of your group. Its was quite hard making sure everyone in the group came and equally took part in the planning and producing of our film but we attained a very good working relationship.
When we initially began to edit our opening sequence we didn't know what to do, and personally I had never used iMovie before and in our preliminary task not much editing was needed. Consequently in order to understand the software better we watched several iMovie tutorials on the internet. This aided us.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Through the process of producing my media product I have gained various skills, I learnt how to use the video camera to film different types of shots for instances long shots i learnt that i had to zoom out to get an wider view or perspective of the location/ surrounding. I also learnt how to add titles and music to my media product, having used the video camera constantly I was eager to learn how it works. I also feel I have acquired alot of skills with the software (imovie) as I continually used it to edit and make changes to my film and i have become very familiar and confident using the imovie software although at first I found it very challenging but overall i have enjoyed producing my film.

Kidulthood Part 1

Kidulthood uses the codes and conventions of a street drama through the main characters of trife (Aml Ameen) And Sam (Noel Clarke) as they both are young youths coming from broken families growing up with no father figure treating the streets as their home and their friends as their true family, yet to realise that they are in a higher risk of danger by being on the streets and needing respect in order to stay alive this is a typical convention of street drama. The way in which they talk, is to typical of the genre as they speak slang and not formal English words such as "cuz" also in their actions they are into sex, drugs, violence and respect of the streets this is typical elements of street drama. The lighting used is more natural than saturated unlike such as Hollywood movies where everything is bright and color full with unrealistic lighting. The way in which they dress us also different from other types of movies like clothes are more realistic of a young teenager today such baggy jeans, hoddies, trainers etc. The genre of urban drama is shown through Mise-en-scene as we can see things such as guns, baseball bats, drugs etc these are typical elements of the genre. The locations used for this film are very urban areas such as estates, parks ans schools were most youths hang out today this is typical of the genre as it shows poverty.
The storyline is basically young teenagers trying to survive in the world through using respect. They are faced with many problems such as pregnancy, drugs, sex, money and violence due to broken families, no father figure, no proper education ad no rules and regulations to help them. I t is survival of the fittest and each youth has to fight their way through life in order to survive The theme of this film is social realism vs crime.

Film Storyboard

Before we proceeded working on our media product, we devised a storyboard plan in order to follow our opening sequence and get a concept of how we want our scenes to look like for a visual effect.  There was a lot of group effort incorporated in the story board planning, before we started drawing up our story boards we thought thoroughly about the plot of our film and planned each scene. Some people in my group drew the images and we all agreed on what shots we used and why, the effect. I wrote all the short annotations on the right hand side of the storyboard, that was predominantly my own contribution to the story boarding outline.
Our drawings shown above represented the action taking place in each shot, the camera angles, and action taking place. We came to an agreement  as a group that we were not going to put all our film titles in the beginning of our film, we wanted to have them scattered in the opening scene, this makes it slightly different from others. As a group we stuck to our initial plan overall a few changes. The description of each shot and the action is displayed in the box on the side. It indicates what type of shot it is and also  a short description of what action is taking place in the particular sequence, e.g. close of main protagonist in the first sequence-is effective as it establishes main character of the film.

Location
Image 1

Image 2

one morning we started looking for location that will suit our film genre. We found two locations but image 1 shows a location with a short tunnel under a rail line.We choose to go for this location 1 for a scene in our film because it was suitable for our genre: gritty urban. There is also graffiti this shows its an urban area, a  lot of teenagers hang out around there. We decided to use image 1 for the fighting scene because its a confined and claustrophobic area we wanted the audience to feel sympathy for the victim. Image 2 continued our urban theme because it provided an escape route for our attackers, it had a corner where they could escape to.
