Kidulthood Part 1
Kidulthood uses the codes and conventions of a street drama through the main characters of trife (Aml Ameen) And Sam (Noel Clarke) as they both are young youths coming from broken families growing up with no father figure treating the streets as their home and their friends as their true family, yet to realise that they are in a higher risk of danger by being on the streets and needing respect in order to stay alive this is a typical convention of street drama. The way in which they talk, is to typical of the genre as they speak slang and not formal English words such as "cuz" also in their actions they are into sex, drugs, violence and respect of the streets this is typical elements of street drama. The lighting used is more natural than saturated unlike such as Hollywood movies where everything is bright and color full with unrealistic lighting. The way in which they dress us also different from other types of movies like clothes are more realistic of a young teenager today such baggy jeans, hoddies, trainers etc. The genre of urban drama is shown through Mise-en-scene as we can see things such as guns, baseball bats, drugs etc these are typical elements of the genre. The locations used for this film are very urban areas such as estates, parks ans schools were most youths hang out today this is typical of the genre as it shows poverty.
The storyline is basically young teenagers trying to survive in the world through using respect. They are faced with many problems such as pregnancy, drugs, sex, money and violence due to broken families, no father figure, no proper education ad no rules and regulations to help them. I t is survival of the fittest and each youth has to fight their way through life in order to survive The theme of this film is social realism vs crime.
